Poor man's Assassin build?

[:1]I'm trying to Mat/Pat each class, but the Assassin is the one that I can't decide on a good build for.

Traps seem the easiest, since casters are usually far better than melee (IME at least) but seem kind of boring. The martial arts tree looks kind of fun, but kick damage is always printed as being really low, so I'm not really sure which is ideal. I also don't have much wealth, which is relevant because I can't make a Chaos. That's unfortunate since Whirlwind is my favorite skill in the game

Posting links would be very useful, I've gone through the sticky but still can't really make up my mind. I'm around level 5 right now with no points invested, lol.|||Trappers are one of the most effective, easiest and safest untwinked builds. Other than that the most effective builds rely on some attack (kicks are great for this) to take down one or two enemies and then Death Sentry does the mopping up. If you go back a page or two or use the search function you'll quickly find some threads where people ask exactly the same question. |||Ilkori's Kick / Trap Guide

If you can up some Gore Riders, you should be good to go.|||goblin toe's are good enough for Ilkori's build... (you are talking about pgems here)|||Hi

Like already been mentioned trappers are by far the easiest to get going on the cheap. You can get a pretty powerful char capable of running nilly and the most expensive piece of her equpiment would be a lem for a treachery armor.

Outside of treachery (and really you COULD get by with stealth or smoke if necessry) you just need:

1 or 2 plus 3 trap claws for main weapons and 2 plus 3 shadow claws on switch for buffing shadow minion and either fade or bos. These shouldnt be too expensive and if youre patient can be shopped in nm or hell. I like shopping anya for em cuz the nilly protal makes it easy to reset her wares. (tip: dont waste playing time shopping though just wait for like when a TV show you like to watch is on and shop during commericals)

Persoanlly I would go with 1 plus 3 trap claw and then a spirit monarch. Yeah you will lose 1 xtra skill point but what you gian from the sprit is worth it IMHO plus even with just cheap blue skiller gear you will have enough plus skills that 1 point wont make much of difference.

Hat: shako is ideal and they seem to be going for 15-20 pgems atm so shouldnt be too hard to get and even if you dont get a shako a lore hat will do just fine until you gamble a nice skiller circlet even a blue plus 3 traps will get ya thro.

ammy: blue plus 3 trap ammy is all you NEED so if you gamble or find something with plus two all skills or plus 3 skills and xtra handy mods it just gravy.

gloves: magefists or frosties will be helpful cuz even with insight spamming traps and mb and cloak can burn through mana fast. Also the fire skill on magefists add to fireblast damage as well. And if not then anything nice you craft or find will do (another hint most traps are technically "thrown" not "cast" so fcr wont affect them BUT ias will help how fast you can throw traps-another reason why treachery is spiffy for trappers) so nice gloves with ias and other handy mods will be useful

belt, boots gloves and rings just best you can find shop or gamble to cover holes in resistances is all you need. With huge ias boost on treachery and fact that claws pretty fast for sassys anyways (and can be shaeld) going with fade can keep you resistances maxed without losing much if any trap throwing speed you might have gotten from BoS.

Getting an act 2 merc and giving him an inisght stick also best way to go I believe.

Hardest part is getting that 1st corpse to get death traps ce going. But really all I do is just cloak/mindblast the monsters and wait until they die. Lobbing in fireblast grenades also handy as well. Then once those bodies start falling it all over pretty much.

LI/FI combos will be toughest to kill. Good news is only monsters with combos like that will be bosses which mean they (unless 1 of the ancients) will always have a pack around em that likely WONT be both LI and FI and when they go down deathtrap ce's will handle the boss.

Only monsters that would be IMPOSSIBLE to kill would be an LI/FI/PI boss which forturnately are VERY rare. Best chance of getting a boss like that is one of the ancients which you can just respawn and anywhere else just skip if ya have to.

Act bosses can be a lil tough but if your patient they WILL go down since you should have a very strong LS and fireblast to workwith and shadow and merc can keep em busy (or even actually help especially if you get ur merc an elite stick for insight)

Where trappers REALLY shine tho is as nilly runners. The vipers can be dangerous but once u get hang of cloaking and mindblasting and hiding round corners and letting traps do work they wont be more than a nusiance and as for nilly himself spamming ds takes his uber CE out of the mix and if everything goes right you dont even see nilly. Just toss traps into his room and wait around corner until you see them stop firing then walk in and collect the keys

And all that can be done with just cheap shopped//gambled blue gear and nothing more expensive than a lem.

And when//if you DO start getting the nicer shinies like arachnid mesh, and soj's and skiller gc's, torches, anni's etc (from like say brokering all those nilly keys you'll be getting and not to mention all the other shinies nillys capable of dropping while running him) --then it just plain demon abuse

Kaytie|||Thanks for the advice, I've already got a lot of high end stuff like Shako/Arachnid Mesh so it seems like the Trapper will be easiest |||Give the Phoenix Strike build a look, in particular both fire and lightning skill synergies. Many damage flavours means less worrying about immunities in Hell difficulty. Despite being a melee character it's a largely skill-based damage build, so epic gear isn't as important as say a Frenzy Barb or Zealot. In all honesty it doesn't matter too much how you go about killing things, since all Assassins have Mind Blast, Cloak of Shadows and Death Sentry which more or less makes the whole game a cakewalk.|||keep in mind that trap laying speed is based on IAS not on FCR!!!|||May I suggest my absolutely favourite, a great pvm character, the Aggressin (see link below for the guide, and read here my thoughts on cheap gear)

Not much trapping, just DS for corpse exploding, this char is too powerful for the early levels. Have been playing this in single player, started with normal claws, then bought with a higher lvl char claws with +ligtning dmg and +poison dmg magic claws (from anya or jamella) and went through normal constantly at /players 8 killing every act boss relatively easy. Since we are talking about a budget build, this works with non elite claws all through nigthmare.

You are playing on bnet right? Below is what I have in single player, which in bnet is really affordable, and if u want to invest a lot of time in meph running with a sorc you might end up with better stuff too.

Helm: The guillaume face can be bought for some pgems and socketing with a 15% ias jewel is great.

Armor: A lionheart can get you through nm easily. not all the time /players 8, but it will do the job. Its str bonus helps equipping the guillaume and its resists help you since finding resist charms takes time. The guide suggests Fortitude and I am still dreaming of it

Weapons: Since u r playing on bnet u can buy dual bartucs, or one bartuc and a rare claw. A good rare claw can come from imbuing or from gambling (if u are lucky). if its rare try having mana steal on it. if it doesn't its ok too.

Gloves: 20ias blood crafted or any 20ias rare are ok through nm. If you hit the 10fpa breakpoint without 20ias gloves u can also use trangouls to raise the poison dmg. After lvl 63 u can try the laying of hands and massacre around!

Belt: string of ears is great for me. If u need mana leech u can also use Wilhelm's Pride after lvl 42.

Boots: I think gore riders are best here, but in my case I cant find any... Nat boots for general pvm, goblin toe and a "Strength" claw is what I use for bosses.

Amulet:
If u cant get a highlord, a cats eye, or atma scarab could work too i think. In my case, a friend of Mephisto (Bremm Sparkfist) was so kind as to drop a Crescent Moon in nm, and this is what I am using now in hell act1.

Rings: ravenfrost and a rare. The rare I suggest mana or dual leech, luckily str, res all, and don't care about AR that much. the skills take care of it really well.

Be sure to read the guide, especially the part about the 10frame attack speed with your claws. When u enter nm it will make a difference. The gameplay part explains something really useful about death sentry placement. Have fun!!
